Welcome Spring!
We have had a relatively mild snow season here in the Midwest but we did experience many bitter cold and damp days where the chill gets into your bones and it feels impossible to ever get warm. So I was very happy to see the date on the calendar announcing the first day of spring, which seems in contrast to both the snow and thunderstorms that we had this past week. Nonetheless, spring is in the air as evidenced by the longer days and the sun repeatedly trying to make an appearance despite the chill that is lingering. Due to spring’s arrival, I was reminded of this poem from my first book.
I wrote this poem several years ago, when I was a teenager. It has now become known to me as the first installment of my Four Seasons series of poems. This young poem found its way into my first book, “Walk Through a Field of Flowers,” and introduced the characters of Mother Earth, the babbling brook, chipmunks, the trees, and the children. They were all doing activities related to the season. Following that poem, my second, third, and fourth books carried on with “It’s Winter Once Again” (https://thepracticalpoet.com/its-winter-once-again-from-scatter-seeds-of-kindness/); “It’s Summertime Once Again” (https://thepracticalpoet.com/its-summertime-once-again-from-gather-seeds-of-hope/); and lastly “It’s Autumn Once Again” (https://thepracticalpoet.com/its-autumn-once-again-from-sow-seeds-of-wisdom/) which rounded out the four seasons. Link to the books that contain these poems can be found at the Books tab above.
As an avid reader, I’ve always loved when I read books from the same author and they bring back a character from a previous book. It is like seeing an old friend and catching up. In this poem “It’s Springtime Once Again,” Mother Earth is just waking up from her winter’s nap and kicking away all the winter dreariness. The babbling brook is talking away to the breeze, the chipmunks are running up and down the trees, and the kids are out flying a kite. They are all out enjoying the rebirth of the spring season. I had no idea when I wrote that first poem so long ago that it would eventually be joined by the other three seasons. I was so happy to reintroduce these characters in each of the poems as they partake in all of the activities and traditions of that particular time of year. I actually got a little sad when I was done with the last poem (It’s Autumn Once Again) since it concluded the series. But then a friend reminded me that there are all kinds of seasons: puppy season, kitten season, baseball season, holiday season. . . Well, you get the point. So, who knows what the future will hold? Perhaps the Seasons series will grow and evolve, and maybe we’ll see these characters again. I hope you enjoy this first installment of the Four Seasons Series.
It’s Springtime Once Again!
I hear a bird outside my window
Singing me a song.
The trees are dancing with new leaves,
The flowers dance along.
The grass gives way to brilliant green
And overtakes the white.
The lovers walk through wooded parks;
The stars shine with delight.
I feel like an intruder
As I open up the door.
The sun has crept through parted blinds
And makes love to the floor.
I feel it in my heart and soul
That spring is in the air.
I whistle an uplifting tune;
The breeze blows back my hair.
Yes! Mother Earth has woken up
From her winter’s nap.
She takes the world by the hand
And holds it in her lap.
She wipes the slumber from her eyes
And steps out of her bed.
She kicks away the winter clouds
And brings spring rain instead.
I watch the chipmunks playing tag
Up the blooming trees.
I wonder what the babbling brook
Is saying to the breeze.
I hear the children’s laughing voices
As they fly a kite.
Up up higher, there it goes!
They’d better hold on tight!
I feel so calm and peaceful
As I look over this land,
As if the earth and I are one
Walking hand in hand.
Then all at once it dawns on me
How much I love this earth.
The world has been reborn today;
Let’s celebrate the birth!
