In my first book, “Walk Through a Field of Flowers; A collection of poems and short stories inspired by life, love, and some heartache along the way”, there is a poem called “So Long For Now.” This poem is about once looking up into the night sky and feeling like there was another presence watching over me, guiding my way with the twinkling of the stars. I’m sure we’ve all had those moments of intuition, where we suddenly change course when we’re driving, and then later learn of an accident that happened along our previous path. Or what about those stories you hear where people changed their flight, and then the plane crashed, or stories about people who were running late the morning of September 11th, and didn’t make it to their office on time, which happened to be inside the ill-fated World Trade Center?
Where does this sense come from that causes us to switch gears at the last minute? Is it pure luck or coincidence? Or do we really all have a guardian angel with us throughout our journey here on earth? Does this guardian angel send us whispers or hints that cause us to rethink our current path? I really believe that’s the case for all of us. I think they send hints in the form of stirrings in our gut that something isn’t right, or when the hairs on the back of our neck stand up. I’ve read up a little bit on spirit guides and guardian angels, and the books I’ve read say these guides are not anyone we knew from a previous life or our time here on earth, which I was disappointed to learn. I’m not sure what I believe on this subject. I’ve always felt a strong connection to my paternal grandmother Ida, who passed before I was born. I’m the spitting image of her and I have always felt like she was in my corner cheering me on as my guardian angel. And I’ve felt my parents around and I know they’ve sent whisperings, which sometimes inspire me to turn into a poem. I remember one time I was going to purchase a handbag that was very expensive, and I was having second thoughts about it. As I was literally walking to the cashier, albeit apprehensively, an image of a medical bill flashed right before my eyes. I knew this was a sign to put the bag back, and put the money toward that bill instead. Hey, no one ever said these guides are fun, or even have good fashion sense. Sometimes they’re the practical voice we all need from time to time.
So no matter what you believe, or how these hints come to us, I believe they need to be listened to and respected. If we choose not to listen to them (after all, we do have free will in this life), and something adversely impacts us as a result, then we have to take that as a lesson and learn from it, and perhaps give those angels and spirit guides a nod and a thank you for having our back, even if we sometimes think it’s hogwash.
Guardian Angel
When you bid the day goodbye
With the setting of the sun,
And you lie down on your pillow
Because at last the day is done,
When you finally close your eyes
And your breath begins to slow,
Please know that I am here,
And I am never letting go.
When you wake up in the morning
And open up your eyes,
And greet the newborn day
With a nod to the blue skies
As you pour yourself some coffee
And go about your day,
Please know that I am here
To guide you on your way.
I am here through thick and thin
And happiness and sorrow.
I’m a memory from yesterday,
And a promise for tomorrow.
I am here for every teardrop
And every precious laugh.
I am here when life feels like
It’s ripping you in half.
I’m the hairs that stand up on your neck
To warn of looming danger.
I’m the alarm bells inside your head
When approached by a stranger.
I’m a nudge into your conscience
And a whisper in your ear.
I am the voice of reason
You may not want to hear.
I’m the stirring in your gut
That makes you take a different route.
I’m aware of every move you make,
As your day you go about.
I am watching from the sidelines
And I’m sitting on the fence.
Some call me intuition;
Others call me a sixth sense.
No matter what you call me,
I am with you for the ride.
I’m your Guardian Angel,
And I’ll never leave your side.
